This report was written by staff in the Africa division of Human Rights Watch based on research collected in the course of more than ten Human Rights Watch research trips to Sudan and Chad between February 2004 and August 2005.

The report was edited by Jemera Rone, Sudan/Uganda researcher and East Africa coordinator for the Africa Division, Georgette Gagnon, deputy director of the Africa Division, James Ross, senior legal advisor, and Ian Gorvin, deputy Program Director.  Iain Levine, Program Director, and Param-Preet Singh, counsel in the International Justice Program, provided editorial comments. Thodleen Dessources, Program associate, Andrea Holley, publications director, and Fitzroy Hepkins, mail manager, made possible the production of this report. Veronica Matushaj, photo editor, assisted with the production of the report, the cover and the photographs.

Human Rights Watch would like to thank the hundreds of individuals in Darfur and elsewhere who generously contributed their insights, and in many cases, shared their direct experiences of abuses with Human Rights Watch researchers in the hope that their contributions could improve the plight of the people of Darfur. Unfortunately, most of these people must remain anonymous due to the continuing risks to their security in Sudan.
