Take Action

Human Rights Watch urges the Congolese government to:

  • Instruct the Ministry of Defense to immediately investigate and hold accountable soldiers responsible for war crimes in central Katanga, with a special focus on the soldiers and commanders of the 62nd, 63rd and 67th brigades.
  • Instruct the Ministry of Justice to immediately investigate and hold accountable Mai Mai leaders responsible for war crimes in central Katanga, including Gédéon Kyungu Mutanga (commonly known as Gédéon) and Makabe Kalenga Ngwele (commonly known as Makabe).
  • Cease appointing individuals responsible for war crimes and other human rights abuses to positions in the government or the national army. Such individuals must be investigated and prosecuted.

Human Rights Watch urges the Congolese government to:

  • Increase pressure on the Congolese government to end the culture of impunity and bring to justice Mai Mai leaders and military officials responsible for war crimes in Katanga.

What can you do?

  • Write to the Congolese government representative at the United Nations requesting that urgent judicial action be taken against both the Congolese army and the Mai Mai for human rights abuses in Katanga. Write in English or French to drcongo@un.int.
  • Write to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ambassador William Swing, requesting him to urge the Congolese government to bring to justice human rights abusers in central Katanga. Write in English or French to info@monuc.org.
