Dear Ambassador Yang Jiechi:
We the undersigned members of the Princeton University community ask that the Chinese government inquire into the case of Dr. Li Shaomin, reportedly detained by Chinese State Security officials in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, near the Hong Kong border, on the evening of February 25, 2001.
Li Shaomin, 44, is a naturalized U.S. citizen and a well-respected scholar. He earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton in 1988 and is currently an associate professor of marketing at the City University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Li has often visited China with no problems since taking up his post at the City University of Hong Kong in 1996. Last May he was invited to Beijing to address a Communist Party meeting on the transition to a market economy. He studies strategic management, marketing, and e-commerce and has written extensively on doing business in China and on privatization's impact on the performance of foreign enterprises.
Chinese authorities have not informed Dr. Li's family why or where he is being held, according to his wife, Liu Yingli.
We are concerned about the continued and unexplained detention of Li Shaomin. We ask that the Chinese government make public where he is being detained, that any charges against him be made known, and that he be immediately and unconditionally released unless there is clear evidence that he has committed a non-political offense.
