ConclusionThe EIPR and HRW submit that Egypt has not upheld “the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights,” and regret that Member States did not “take into account the contribution of candidates to the promotion and protection of human rights,” pursuant to General Assembly Resolution 60/251 when electing Egypt to the Council. Nevertheless, as a member of the Human Rights Council, this is now an opportunity to scrutinize Egypt's human rights record and to ensure it meets the benchmarks it committed to prior to being elected. |
